Styles

• Dog-ear. Flat boards with the top corners clipped. The classic backyard fence.
• Shadowbox. Boards alternate on each side of the rail. It looks finished from both sides.
• Board-on-board. Overlapping boards with no gaps. Full privacy.
• Horizontal. Boards run sideways for a modern look.

City rules for wood fences

Cape Coral code is specific about wood.

• Wood must be decay resistant or pressure treated.
• It must be painted or stained.
• The finished side faces out, toward the neighbor or the street.
• Posts go on the inside, unless both sides of the fence match.

Max height is 6 ft for residential, the same as every other material.

Wood or vinyl?

Both give you privacy. The difference is upkeep. Wood needs paint or stain, by code, and it needs it again over time in our humidity. Vinyl doesn't. Best fit: interior lots

Wood privacy fits best on an interior lot. On a canal lot, the back 20 ft must be open mesh above 3 ft, so a full-height wood fence can't run across the back. Wood can still run down the sides, with an aluminum or chain link section at the water.
